MORGAN, GARRETT A. (4 Mar. 1877 [sometimes given as 1879]-27 July 1963), was an important inventor and businessman active in the affairs of Cleveland's AFRICAN AMERICAN community. Among his most notable inventions were an early gas mask and a traffic light. Born in Paris, Ky., to Sydney and Eliza Reed, both former enslaved people, Morgan received 6 years of education before leaving home at age.

About this collection. Garrett A. Morgan (1877-1963) was an entrepreneur and inventor whose inventions included the electric traffic signal and the gas mask. Morgan moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1895 and opened his own sewing machine sales and repair shop in 1907. He received a patent on his gas mask in 1912 and formed the National Safety Device.
